AMUA Alumni Spotlight: Katie Weathers

Tell us about what you’ve been working on since your time at AMUA.

Since I graduated from Academy of Makeup Arts Special Effects program in December of 2016, I have worked on one really cool film with a Saw torture feeling to it, and more recently I have been in the AMUA Alumni group helping create two characters for the Game of Thrones convention coming up. You really can’t wait for gigs, you have to practice often, tone your skills and keep moving. I have done a demo at the Nashville Haunt convention for AMUA, taught the SFX weekend class at the school and am also teaching a summer week long SFX course as well for the school. I feel so blessed to have these opportunities and am driven by my love for makeup, my family, friends I’ve made along the way and God.

What’s your dream?

My dream? I suppose I should say I have an end goal, but I don’t. Let me explain. Things are forever changing, goals moving on, dreams expanding. The future, though it may be scary, is a fun adventure! I dream about traveling with makeup work, meeting amazing people, learning more about the the things that makes movies happen. I dream to create spectacular creatures, things, people, to see where life takes me on this special effects makeup journey that I’m on.

What advice would you give an aspiring makeup artist?

The best advice I could give an aspiring makeup artist, would be to not hold back. Up until, and even a little during school, I was worried about being too weird with my paint jobs and sculptures. But when I finally let that go, I created amazing sculptures, paint jobs and creatures that I loved! Be true to yourself, we are all some kind of different or weird. Because in that moment where we are all strange, it’s the best feeling.
