We’ve compiled AMUA’s August highlights for you! We’re sharing behind the scenes photos of our classroom, what our alumni and faculty have been up to, and upcoming events that we think you will find interesting.
Congratulations to Kevin St. James on his promotion to Program Director of our Makeup for TV & Film Program! Kevin has been with us for six years and it’s time to revamp the program.
We’ll be taking a close look at student feedback, graduate outcomes, and getting input from makeup department heads from New York to Atlanta to Los Angeles to carefully re-craft our beauty programs into what the industry needs currently are so our graduates have the best chance to succeed!
Morgan Gilmore, who’s been doing the wigs for The Wiz the Musical, shared this exciting news on her Instagram:
“This team is something I’ll always hold dear. You’re looking at the irreplaceable cast and crew of The Wiz the musical. If you don’t know, The Wiz is a multi-cultural take on The Wizard of Oz filled with undeniably catchy songs, unforgettable costumes, and to my dismay, 54 wigs. All of this, just in three weeks. And I got the privilege to be a part of it. These past three weeks were a whirlwind of emotions, learning experiences, and new friends. There’s a few people who need to know my appreciation.
First, @queenbhart thank you for trusting me with such a big task. You had a beautiful, authentic vision for this show, and it shined through. Lord knows why you chose me to tag along, but I’m so glad you did.
To @cantpatthis and the team of Broadway Sacramento: Thank you for flying me across the country to play in the hair room. People like you are the reason I chose this career. I hope to see you next season.
And finally, @amuanashville thank you for equipping me with these skills so I can be a part of this world at a wide-eyed 21 years old. Here’s to you and any more upcoming adventures.”

Here are some of the projects we worked on in the classrooms this month. On the left is a maquette sculpture, part of a study for a future multi-piece foam latex application. This one is made by Erin Strange, one of our talented Makeup Artist: Special Effects students. And we also studied history’s interesting hairpieces. This one (photo on the right) is inspired by 1840 Biedermeier Germany.
