Pre-Arrival

We recommend packing light. We have created a What to Bring Checklist to help you shop and pack.

Each student is permitted to bring two guests/helpers along during move-in. If you have a family pet, please leave your furry friends at home as they are not permitted in the residences.

Want to ship some of your belongings? Please make sure they arrive after you do. We are unable to hold items for people who are not current residents and will have to return to sender unless you have checked in.

Remember to leave behind alcohol, illegal drugs, drug and alcohol paraphernalia, weapons, pets, hot plates, microwaves, incense and candles (including wickless), extension cords, halogen lamps, valuables, and large amounts of cash.

As a private institution, AMUA obides by Tennessee state laws, which classify marijuana as an illegal substance.

Bathroom Cleaning Tips

Daily maintenance of bathrooms and sinks is the responsibility of residents. Here are some tips.

  • Dust and sweep: Wipe bathroom surfaces with a damp rag including the back of the toilet and sink areas. Sweep the floor, then wipe with cloth and disinfectant cleaner.
  • Toilet: Apply the toilet bowl cleaner and let it sit for a few minutes while doing other tasks. Use a damp cloth to wipe down the outside of the toilet bowl, seat, lid, and top with disinfectant cleaner. With a toilet brush, scrub the inside of the bowl and flush.
  • Shower: If you ignore cleaning the shower, you’ll only have to scrub harder in the future. Apply disinfectant cleaner, let it sit for about 15 minutes, and then clean with a scrub pad and rinse. Once a month, remove the shower curtain and wash in the washing machine. Hang while wet—do not dry in dryer.
  • Sink and counter: Apply disinfectant cleaner on fixtures and counters, wipe with damp cloth.
  • Mirror: Spray glass cleaner on the mirror, wipe away with a rag or paper towel.

In general, the more often you clean, the quicker it will be each time. Letting dirt build up creates an environment where germs and bacteria thrive, so put on some gloves and keep it clean! We recommend doing this once a week.

Bring these helpful cleaning products

  • Rubber gloves
  • Disinfectant cleaner
  • Glass cleaner
  • Toilet bowl cleaner and brush
  • Rags or soft cloth

Holidays & Breaks

During some breaks and holidays our campus will close. If you are making travel arrangements please be mindful of closing dates. View the School Calendar for a list of scheduled breaks.

Rooms with vacancies may be entered to prepare the space for a new resident. Please be sure that your belongings are not on the side of the room the new resident will be using. In the event that you come back from break and find a new roommate living in your room, we hope that you will extend them a warm AMUA welcome and provide them equitable space to share the room.

Scheduled maintenance may be completed during breaks. This includes checking smoke detectors, door locks, heaters, and other projects. This will require Housing staff to be in the rooms. If you have any questions or concerns, please let AMUA Admin know.

Moving Out

Students must move out of student housing within 24 hours after their last day of classes.

Remember, you may donate unwanted items to a local charity before you go.

Day of move-out checklist:

  • Remove all trash and recycling from your room and place in designated locations; do not leave trash in hallways or other public areas (charges may be added to your account)
  • Restore your room to its initial condition at check-in (including furniture set-up)
  • Be sure all furnishings are accounted for and left in the room (this includes: mattress pad, trash can, and recycle bin)
  • Remove all personal belongings (double check all the drawers)
  • Vacuum or sweep the floor, including underneath the beds
  • Complete your check-out
  • Donate or take your bike home
  • Turn in your keys to the Administrative office

Failure to follow the move-out checklist may result in an improper check-out fines, there may be charges for cleaning, missing keys or furniture, and damaged property.

If room damage was not present when you checked in, it is considered your liability and you will be charged for it unless you can prove otherwise. Any charges for damage or cleaning in a common area will be divided equally among all students in the floor, hall, or building.

Additional cleaning and damage charges may be assessed after check-out. Please review the check-out procedures carefully and talk to your roommate to work out a fair cleaning arrangement.

Billing & Payment

Student Housing bills room and board charges to your student account at the beginning of each term. Students will be invoiced  via the AMUA Student Portal. Payment for the entire term is due upon move-in or at the beginning of the term, whichever comes first. You can make a payment in the student portal via ACH (bank transfer) or Credit Card (3% processing fee).

Billing Support
If you have questions about the Student Housing sections of your bill, please call 615-925-9963.

Group Damage Charge

The school has developed a response to housing offenses such as theft and vandalism. Designed to promote responsibility for the community, the “group damages charge” holds all unit residents accountable when members demonstrate disregard for their living environment and when excessive cleaning is necessary. These charges come out each term and are billed to students’ accounts as appropriate.
