August Newsletter

So much has happened during our summer break, as well as our first week back to class! We’ll do our best to fit it all into one newsletter, so come see what we’ve been up to!

Summer Camps

Campers joined us from all over Tennessee (and a few from farther away) to learn the ins and outs of special effects makeup. From 2-D cuts and bruises to creating realistic blood effects, these campers learned a ton! Our photography instructor, Chuck, took the opportunity to make a fun zombie short film from our Movie Magic Makeup Camp. Check it out! (PSST! We’ll be hosting a Halloween Zombie camp, so keep an eye out for that!)

The Makeup Show

At the end of June, we were lucky enough to have a booth at Nashville’s first Makeup Show! It was so much fun to meet local hair and makeup artists as well as learn more about makeup brands from all over. Our Beauty and Business instructor, Claire, led a great demo in the Art of Character Design where she made one of our current students, Skyler, look almost unrecognizable. Check out the demo here!

Farewell Michael

We have the mixed emotions in sharing this news… both excitement and a touch of sadness. It is our pleasure to announce that Michael Meyer has accepted a job offer as an Associate Professor of Animatronics at Purdue University in Indiana. As you are well aware, Michael’s passion for the world of 3-D Printing and Animatronics has made him an invaluable asset to our team, and he has consistently demonstrated his innovative spirit in this field. Though he is already missed, his new position will bring him fresh opportunities and challenges, and we couldn’t be more thrilled for him!

Let us remember the essence of mudita, the joy of sharing in the happiness of others, and join us in extending our heartfelt congratulations to Michael! He has left a lasting impression on our students, our staff, and our school.

Upcoming Events

GooCon August 12-13 in Atlanta, GA

Our very own Ben Rittenhouse will be leading a Foam Latex lecture and Portfolio Review at this year’s GooCon! This is an excellent time to network with industry leaders AND learn a few things while you’re there. With the current industry strike, we estimate an increased number in attendance at conventions, so hop on this opportunity! If you’re a current student or alumni, reach out on our community pages to find people to drive with or split a hotel room with. It’s going to be worth it so get your tickets here!

DragonCon August 31-September 4 in Atlanta, GA

DragonCon is the perfect place to show off your hair and makeup skills! If you’re in to Cosplay, this is definitely the event to go to that’s close by to our school. The panel line up this year looks really cool, and it’s always fun to talk to anyone who goes all out for their hair, makeup, and costumes!

"9 to 5" with the Nashville Rep - Opening night is September 8

We’re only in our second week of classes and our students are already getting hands on experience working with the local theatres! Current student Lydia Buford is the current Wig Apprentice for the Nashville Rep, and will help lead other current students in designing 30 wigs for the performances of 9 to 5 The Musical. Go ahead and get your tickets now!

SAVE THE DATE: AMUA's Industry Mixer (and 12th Birthday Party!) is November 10

For our birthday this year, we decided to throw a big birthday bash and invite all of our industry friends to celebrate with us and see what we’re up to! More details to come, so save the date.

Graduation and Portfolio Review on December 16

All students are welcome to show off their work from the semester during our Portfolio Review! Portfolio Review is followed by Graduation, so join us as we show off our student’s work and then congratulate our graduating students as they move on to their next adventure.

Interested in working with us?

Whether you have a short film, feature, live theatrical show, runway show, or anything in between, let’s talk about it!
