Recapping the Best of November 2019

Recapping the Best of November 2019

We’ve compiled AMUA’s November highlights for you! We’re sharing behind the scenes photos of our classroom, what our alumni and faculty have been up to, and upcoming events that we think you will find interesting.

Cage The Elephant released their new music video, Social Clues, and AMUA students were working behind the scenes on it, together with Ben Rittenhouse – AMUA Special Effects Makeup Instructor.

Gabrielle Cowles shares about her experience:

“When I was asked to work on the Cage the Elephant music video, I didn’t really know what to expect. We were sent some very artsy, dramatic reference images of models with their faces painted white, some with bold pops of color, some with patterns, others just very plain. We were the first to arrive in the morning and got to work setting out all the wigs and paints we brought. It ended up being a 16 hour day! When it was our turn to apply make-up, it was very fast-paced.

The lead singer, Matt, had his own illustrations to give us for reference, so we recreated exactly what he wanted. He changed his mind a few times and we had to backtrack, erase and start over but all the band members were incredibly patient and understanding. Being able to see how the make-up we applied helped bring his vision to life was unbelievably satisfying and, of course, exciting!

Being on set, knowing I was there representing both myself and the school, was an invaluable experience. I’m so grateful I had the opportunity, it was a real confidence booster and further solidified that being a make-up artist is exactly what I want to be doing.”

Enrollment ends soon for our upcoming Spring term. Programs start on January 6th, 2020.

The Art of Wig and Hair Design Program is a 20-week intensive course that will teach you all you need to know to design, create, and style wigs, facial hair, and faux fur. From week one, you’ll be doing the practical, hands-on work wig makers do every day. You’ll also be collaborating with students from other programs on larger projects, structured just like a real film crew.

The next generation of special effect makeup artists is learning in AMUA’s Makeup Artist: Special Effects Program. This intensive 20-week program teaches you to create and apply startlingly realistic makeup and prosthetic effects that meet the highest industry standards.

Looking ahead...

Students of Academy of Make Up Arts graduating from our beauty, special effects, and wig design programs will display their portfolios and projects at AMUA’s Portfolio Review.

An estimated 25 students will participate in the review from 7-9 pm at the adjoining event space in Suite #130. The presentation is free and open to the public.

At Portfolio Review, graduates will display character sketches, portfolio photographs, molds, models, props, and wigs they’ve created. They will be present to answer questions, along with our renowned faculty.
