Why Theatre Professionals Might Choose Trade School Over University

As I was finishing my undergraduate degree in Theatre in the late 1990s, I spent countless hours deciding which graduate program I should continue on with. If I was serious about a career in professional theatre and/or film and TV, it seemed more degrees were necessary. While the traditional university path does have its merits depending on a student's career goals, it is not the only way. For me, I'm so glad I opted to not continue any further in the world of academia. I've worked professionally in theatre for over 2 decades, been a part major music videos here…

How To Tell If Makeup Is “Professional”

The cosmetics industry has changed a lot in the last couple of decades. Our grandmothers had much fewer options. There was inexpensive drug store makeup on one end, and on the other, limited luxury brands like Chanel. There wasn't much in the middle. Today, with stores like Sephora and Ulta and new cosmetics lines coming out regularly, it might be difficult to determine what is high quality enough for a professional makeup artist's kit. There isn't necessarily a clear-cut check list, and every artist will have varying opinions (Kevin James Bennett shared with me at IMATS this year that he regularly…

Alumni Spotlight: Char Braden

Since my time at AMUA, I have been working in all areas of makeup from Tv/Film, production, weddings, and teaching. My dream is to do big advertisement campaigns and commercial shoots, as well as major editorials. My advice that I would give to a new artist is that when you first get started, maintain a main income. There is so much to learn about this industry and blowing up overnight probably will not happen. So take your time, figure out which direction you want to go in, and stay educated. It has been incredibly fun building relationships in an industry that I could not have imagined being a part of a year ago. Being relatively new to the makeup world, it has been extremely gratifying to see my work in the portfolios of models and photographers that I truly respect and even a few small publications. While the majority of my work has been fashion shoots and shows, I have also had…
