April Newsletter – halfway there!

It’s hard to believe we’re halfway through another semester here at AMUA! Time flies when you’re learning all things film and theatre. Our students enjoyed a spring break and came back refreshed and ready to finish the semester strong!

USITT

Last month AMUA students got the chance to take a little break from school and enjoy their spring break! We can’t say the same for our instructors who can’t stop won’t stop. Stefanie, Michael, and Ben all traveled to St. Louis to be a part of USITT 2023! USITT, or the United States Institute for Theatre Technology, connects performing arts design and technology communities to ensure a vibrant dialog among practitioners, educators, and students. It’s a great conference for making connections and learning new techniques! Both Ben and Michael taught a few invaluable demonstrations – each demo represents a small snippet of what our students learn here at AMUA! AND, all of the demos our instructors led were completely sold out! Well done to our team!

Ben lead a few demonstrations on 3D transfers – these prosaide transfers are an industry standard and one of the first things our special effects students learn.

Michael also lead a few demonstrations on 3D transfers, but also taught ventilation for facial hair construction as well as how to style facial hair pieces.

In the Shop – Students at Work

  • Students are building all the Audreys for Hazel Green High School’s production of Little Shop of Horrors! LilahDavid, JazlynTyler, and Alden are in the shop building and running prosthetics as we speak. Plus, there’s a larger than life Audrey taking up a whole portion of the studio. I’m talking taller than all our students!
  • Lydia and Caroline styled wigs and were both backstage running wigs for Belmont’s production of Beauty and the Beast. One of our special effects students, Austin, created the mask for the Beast! Production wrapped March 27th.
  • Smoke on the Mountain with Studio Tenn had Jade styling and running wigs for shows starting March 23rd.
    • We don’t just make our students work all the time… last month we had our very own St. Patrick’s Day karaoke party! Luckily, one of our current students, David, is also a part-time DJ and hosts karaoke events all over town! Book him for your next event here.
